🥄 Cup Volume: Why a 32D Cup is NOT the Same as a 36D

A common myth is that a D cup is a D cup. In reality, cup volume changes with the band — a 36D holds more than a 32D.

How cup volume scales

Each band size adds about 0.5 inch to cup width. So 32D and 34D look similar on paper but the 34D has a wider, deeper cup. This is why sister sizes work — going down a band and up a cup keeps volume constant.

Why this matters when shopping

If a 34C does not fit, try 32D (sister size, more projected) or 36B (sister size, wider and shallower). Same volume, different shape.

Frequently Asked Questions

Roughly 1/2 inch of cup depth per band size.
Are letter cups consistent across brands?
No. UK and EU systems differ from US, and brands fit differently. Always check the brand size chart.
